The first is by casting the acrylic into the required rod diameter - this is called cast acrylic rod and gives the best optical finish available. Additionally, cast acrylic rod offers a range of large diameters up to 200mm.
The second method of manufacture is by extruding the acrylic into the required rod diameter - this is called extruded acrylic rod and provides an economical alternative to cast acrylic where aesthetic finish is less crucial (although still acceptable), but the diameters available are limited to a maximum of 40mm. I had our acrylic rods for over five years before we moved from this house and can happily report that they held up really well. There was a barely noticeable sag between the brackets a few years after I got my rods so I simply rotated the rod in the brackets 180 degrees and that totally took care of it. Also, there was no yellowing of the acrylic during that five years. I would absolutely buy the same acrylic rods again!

I love this look, you did a lovely job. I am doing almost exactly the same thing you did, and I am wondering if you had any issues with scratching on the acrylic rod when you threaded it through the brackets? Or scratches from the curtain rings during regular use?
I also ditched the end brackets when I changed the hardware and had Kipp polish the ends of the acrylic for me. I think it looks really nice and helps you notice the rod and hardware more. Although I still like the end caps in some settings, I prefer the simplicity of the polished ends in my living room.

The use of a silane coupling agent (methacryloxypropyl-trichlorosilane) to improve the mechanical properties of steel fiber-reinforced acrylic bone cements was assessed. Changes to the tensile and fracture properties of bone cements reinforced with silane-coated or uncoated 316L stainless steel fibers of different aspect ratios were studied. Contact-angle measurements indicated that the coupling agent coats the metal surface through room temperature treatments in a short time (within 2 h). Push-out tests indicated that the interfacial shear strength of silane-coated 316L stainless steel rods is 141% higher than the uncoated rods. The elastic moduli, ultimate stresses, and fracture toughness of the silane-coated, steel fiber-reinforced bone cements are significantly higher than the bone cements reinforced with uncoated steel fibers. There were no differences in the tensile mechanical properties of the silane-coated or uncoated, steel fiber-reinforced cements after aging in a physiological saline solution, indicating that the bonding effectiveness is decreased by the intrusion of water at the metal-polymer interface. Because of possible biocompatibility issues with leaching of the silane coupling agent and no long-term mechanical benefit in simulated aging experiments, the use of these agents is not recommended for in vivo use. 781b155fdc
